The term 420 is, at its simplest, a shorthand or slang reference to 4:20 PM (again, in the American style) or 4/20 on the calendar. Its use in reference to cannabis has been around for decades now and was (probably) originally used by a group of high school students in California who would meet up at 4:20 in the afternoon to smoke cannabis.
