Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that a pretty historic announcement was made last week by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). HHS officially recommended that marijuana be rescheduled from Schedule I to Schedule III of the federal Controlled Substances Act (CSA). The HHS news means that the country’s top health agency has finally conceded that cannabis has medical value, and isn’t a drug of abuse on par with fentanyl or heroin.

"This milestone reflects the reality that advocates have been engaged in a multi-decade long struggle to compel the federal government to acknowledge the obvious: that cannabis possesses therapeutic benefits. It also highlights the fact that the federal government’s ongoing refusal to do so has been strictly a political decision." The legalization of cannabis in some countries and states has brought about significant changes in the healthcare industry. One of the most notable shifts is the decrease in the demand for prescription codeine. Codeine is a widely prescribed painkiller that is commonly used to manage mild to moderate pain. However, with the increasing popularity of cannabis, many people are turning to marijuana as a safer and better alternative for pain management.
