While Super Boof has been around for a while now, 2023 was the real breakout year for the funny-named strain. Northern Heights by Oregonix included the cut as part of the labels first strain drops, and it immediately grabbed my attention. I stopped into nuEra Champaign and picked up an eighth to sample.
As a big fan of lemon-heavy strains, I imagined Lemon Tree would be the perfect personal cultivar. After sampling and growing a cut, it’s been a “don’t meet your heroes” lesson with the flavor leaning more into tangy diesel than tangy lemon. Legends has added Gelonade, a Lemon Tree descendant, to its lineup.
Thankfully, The Botanist has more than one “strawberry strain” in its new genetic lineup. Rythm has tapped into this strategy with several strains. Recently, I spotted Animal Face, a strain bred by Seed Junky Genetics , on the menu at Rise Effingham , so I stopped in and picked up a sample. One of the simplest paths to a strong genetic library is simply choosing known cuts from respectable breeders.
One of the more interesting strain runs of 2023 was watching as Revolution honed in the Cookies’ genetic lineup with some of the brand’s well-known strains, such as Georgia Pie and Red Velvet. Red Velvet is a hybrid cross of Lemon Cherry Gelato and Pink Acai.
Compound Genetics has created some of my favorite strains. The trichome frost covering the buds was milky but sparkled when held up to the light. A pass through the grinder unleashed the terpenes, providing additional notes of mint, sage, and a synergy of candy sweetness and lemon that reminded me of a Lemon Shake Up from the fair.
Space Donkey is a sativa leaning hybrid cross of Frost Donkey and Alien Rock Candy developed in-house by Revolution’s own genetics team. I detected tangy mango, lemon, hot diesel, floral perfume, and dry hops on the top end. This live resin tested at 1.53% THC, 0.19% CBDa, 82.2% THCa, and 89.79% total cannabinoids.
93 Boyz has tapped into big name strains such as Jet Fuel and Gary Payton for its genetic library, so it’s no surprise to see the label putting out a cut of Gelonade. Gelonade is a sativa-leaning hybrid cross of Lemon Tree and Gelato #41. I stopped into Trinity Compassionate Care and picked up an eighth to sample.
For more than a decade, I have harbored a deep affinity for strains with a heavy tangerine flavor profile. My fond memories of purchasing Tangie and Orange Bud in the nascent stages of Colorado’s legalization have persisted, and I’ve remained devoted to seeking out citrus-heavy strains ever since.
That search is what led me to 4Front’s Gorilla Lemon Fire by Funky Monkey on the menu at Mission South Chicago. Gorilla Lemon Fire is an indica-leaning hybrid cross of (Gorilla Glue #4 and Zkittlez) and Lemon Pie. The post Review: Gorilla Lemon Fire by Funky Monkey appeared first on Illinois News Joint.
Any budtender will tell you that a large percentage of the dispensary consumer base is still chasing high THC strains. Flying Monkeys, along with Bedford Grow’s Emerald City Kush and Ruby Slippers strains, is a take on the shared parent: Oz Kush. These buds were turf green on the surface and light purple at the core with a sparkling, milky white trichome frost. Flying Monkeys is an indica leaning hybrid cross of Gorilla Glue #4 and Oz Kush BX1.
However, this was the first time I’ve encountered the strain as raw flower. I picked up a sample at Consume Marion , so I could review the purest expression of the strain for our Work Sativa series. Deep-forest green flowers with dark-burnt orange, almost brown hairs, were covered with a light amber trichome frost.
Many major regional cannabis brands eventually spawn a namesake strain: think High-25 in Colorado, LA Confidential in California, or NYC Diesel in the Empire State, just to name a few. A few Illinois cultivators have already created specific namesakes strains, and I enjoy seeing the list grow.
Nowadays, whenever I come across the strain, I pick up a sample, if only to compare it to the flowers I cultivate myself. They were meticulously trimmed into Christmas tree shapes, with a bright green color and a sparkling, milky trichome frost covering them. I was so impressed by the cultivar that I sourced a clone for my own garden.
ILNJ photo These flowers were highly photogenic with a base tone of forest green and splashes of royal purple underneath and plenty of fire orange hairs, all of it coated in a dense and sparkling milky trichome frost. The flavor was just as strong as the aroma with bright candied berries, lemon whipped cream, hot rubber, musk, and diesel.

Bright-lime-green with a smattering of small dried fire-orange hairs, these flowers carried ambering trichome frost and some deep forest green sugar leaf remnants. The scent was pungent with top end notes of freshly harvested garlic, lemon, dried hops, wet slate, and hints of sweet candy on the finish.
