I suspect Dr. Kane had exaggerated the effects of the pot in order to moralize about the evils of hash smoking, as he was a prolific anti-drug writer as well as being a practitioner of “modern” medicine. As for “hash-heesh”, there were many ways to spell hashish back in the 1800s, and that was one of them.
