New Mexico legalized the medicinal use of cannabis in 2007 and has more than 100,000 patients currently enrolled in its medical marijuana program. In 2019, the state decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, making possession of up to half an ounce of cannabis a civil infraction carrying a fine of not more than $50.

Although Pelosi started cosponsoring fewer bills in general after being named House speaker in 2007 and in her post-speakership years, she’s still put her name on dozens of pieces of legislation during that time—though none are related to marijuana. He’s a strong proponent of marijuana decriminalization.

Australia has a legal medical marijuana program, and while recreational cannabis remains illegal on the federal level, the enforcement of cannabis laws and the penalties handed out can differ widely from one territory to another.

The United Kingdom legalized medical cannabis in November 2018 but the program is the subject of criticism regarding access to medicine and approval of patients. The UK government made the decision i n 2004 to reclassify cannabis from a Class B to Class C drug, but the decision was rescinded in 2009.

In November 2007, Elsa Conde, the Chamber of Deputies legislator, introduced the first federal bill to regulate medicinal cannabis. The bill sought to defend cannabis consumers from criminalization, replacing prison sentences with educational programs and legalizing home cultivation for qualified individuals.
