When the baking team at MariMed’s New Bedford, MA, edibles facility prepared to launch a new line of THC-infused brownies, they had two ideas: debut their Bubby’s Baked products on National Brownie Day (Dec. 8), and go big. Really big.

They succeeded.

This morning, to mark the coming of National Brownie Day, MariMed’s craft confectioners revealed photos of the world’s largest weed brownie. This monster Bubby’s Baked block-of-choc weighs in at 850 pounds. It’s three feet wide, three feet long, and 15 inches tall.

It contains 20,000 mg of THC.

That’s 200 times the dosage allowed in a single packaged brownie (100 mg). So the 11.25 cubic square foot brownie would be sufficient to get you and 199 of your closest friends quite pleasingly high.

Panacea Wellness carries normal sizes

It’s actually not a massive dose when you break it down pound-for-pound. That’s a little less than 24mg of THC per pound of brownie. If you’re eating one full pound of brownie, you’re eating a lot of brownie.

Mini-me versions of the Bubby’s Baked big block are available starting today at Panacea Wellness, the MariMed-owned cannabis store in Middleborough, MA. In coming months the brownies will be available in dispensaries in Maryland and Delaware.

Going for a world record

Ryan Crandall, MariMed’s chief product officer and senior vice-president of sales, managed the project.

“When we first started talking about this, we realized there were several of us who had been infatuated with the Guinness Book of World Records over the years,” Crandall told Leafly. “And the idea of getting in there was exciting. That was our aspiration. We felt that Jake and his team could execute.”

The world’s largest non-infused brownie was about 250 pounds, “so we figured we’d blow it out of the water and then add the benefit of being infused,” Crandall added.

Does it scale?

Jake Dean, MariMed’s senior food scientist, led the team that baked the brownie. (He’s the one with the beard in the photos above.)

“We didn’t stray too far from how we make our normal brownies,” Dean said. “Our normal product is about 10 grams per serving, and this was 850 pounds, so we had to scale everything up quite a bit.”

“We had an increased bake time,” he added, “and used some baking tools to help heat the center of the brownie so it would bake evenly.”

Ingredients in the record-setting brownie include:

  • 81 pounds flour
  • 212 pounds butter
  • 249 pounds brown sugar
  • 201 pounds liquid sugar
  • 122 pounds cocoa powder
  • 2 pounds baking powder
  • 1,344 eggs
  • 5.3 pounds vanilla extract

Heavy weight champion

How do you move an 850-pound brownie?

“Very carefully,” Dean said. “I built a pallet that would support it, and built some supports for the table it sat on. A little bit of fortification was required.”

What happens to the brownie now?

No, you can’t stop by and slice a piece off with a pocket knife.

It’s not clear whether bite-size versions of the world record brownie would be legal to sell in most states, because regulations regarding THC potency are exacting. So the MariMed team is making plans to distribute pieces of the big brownie within the company, in accordance with state regulations.

Unfortunately, Guinness Book officials informed the MariMed team that their record-keepers were not accepting cannabis entries at this time. But that didn’t dissuade the bakers.

“When the Guinness Book is prepared to take more cannabis entries,” Ryan Crandall said, “we feel as though we’ll be at the top of that list.”
