Las Vegas Officially Opens First Cannabis Consumption Lounge

Seven years after adult-use (recreational) cannabis was first legalized in Nevada, a new endeavor is beginning–the opening of cannabis consumption lounges in Las Vegas.

The first one, Smoke and Mirrors, officially made its first money on February 23 with a 4:20 sale to Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, a long-time cannabis advocate. This historic purchase is set to change the marijuana industry in Las Vegas, enhancing its status as a top tourist destination.

Until now, tourists to Las Vegas have been put in a bind when it comes to cannabis. You can legally purchase it, but you can’t consume cannabis outdoors or in hotel rooms. Places like Smoke and Mirrors give visitors a safe, legal place to indulge in their marijuana purchases without risk of fines or legal trouble. Not only can patrons use cannabis products purchased at nearby dispensaries in Smoke and Mirrors, but the venue will also offer a range of 11 THC-infused drinks. These include tasty offerings like the Godfather, named for Tick Segerblom and made with Sobreo Vietnamese Anise, blueberry puree, lime juice, pineapple juice, agave nectar, and basil leaves.

City legislators have been working on handing out licenses for cannabis consumption lounges for some time now, with 18 more lounges working behind the scenes to open their doors. They aren’t just marijuana bars, though–Smoke and Mirrors (and other lounges like it) will offer live music, co-working opportunities, and social events.

Another cannabis lounge, Planet 13, is set to open before April 20. It will offer THC-infused cocktails, various cannabis products, and a menu of tasty treats from its restaurant next door.

“With consumption lounges, the program we’re rolling out is very unique. There’s no blueprint, no real example across the nation. So we’re blazing some new ground here,” said Tyler Klimas, executive director of the Cannabis Compliance Board, to Eater Las Vegas.

The Cannabis Compliance Board is working hard to ensure that the rollout of consumption lounges is done fairly. Twenty businesses will receive social equity licenses, which are designed for applicants who have been negatively impacted by the war on drugs. The fees are much lower, and the goal is to promote diversity within the cannabis industry.

Smoke and Mirrors is located at 2975 S. Sammy Davis Jr. Drive, half a mile from Las Vegas Boulevard and right next to Thrive Dispensary. They close at midnight daily. Fortunately for patrons, people who would like to leave their cars overnight will not be towed, promoting safe consumption and cannabis use.

“We’ve legalized marijuana back in 2017. It’s taken another seven years to get here. It’s time. I’m hoping this is the start of something big. It’s just an incredibly slow, complicated process. But now we have the first one opening. Hopefully, they’ll go faster from here on, and then it’ll just be part of the Las Vegas experience,” said Segerblom, via FOX5 Vegas.
