Utica sets 3% marijuana sales tax
Mayor says no dispensaries have inquired about the village
As other Illinois communities have done in recent weeks, Utica trustees approved an ordinance Thursday that places a 3% tax on the sale of any “adult use cannabis” in the village starting next year.
Village President David Stewart said state law mandates cities must establish such ordinances before Oct. 1 even if no marijuana is sold in the village or if the board decides not to allow such businesses.
“At this moment, we have no such dispensaries in town and have had no inquiries to open one,” Stewart said.

Alton approves 3% tax on legal pot sales
ALTON — Aldermen on Wednesday unanimously approved an ordinance amending the city’s municipal code to include a 3% municipal cannabis retailers’ occupation tax.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, people and businesses engaged in the retail sale of cannabis in Alton must remit payment to the Illinois Department of Revenue equal to 3% of their gross receipts for cannabis sales, excluding cannabis purchased under the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act.

Jacksonville council approves 3% cannabis tax
Jacksonville City Council approved during a special meeting Friday a tax on cannabis sales.
The 3% tax on gross receipts from cannabis sales was unanimously approved by aldermen present.
The tax applies to cannabis purchases that do not fall under the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act.
The council rushed to approve the ordinance with an emergency clause to ensure that the city would not miss out on any potential revenue if the effective date of the state law governing cannabis sales was moved to a date earlier than Sept. 1.
