Connecticut’s First Day Of Legal Recreational Marijuana Sales Tops $250,000Posted by On

Regulated sales of marijuana began in Connecticut on Tuesday, with the state’s cannabis retailers ringing up more than $250,000 in sales on the first day of the legal adult-use cannabis market.

Seven existing medical marijuana dispensaries began selling recreational marijuana on Tuesday after receiving licenses as so-called hybrid retailers, allowing them to serve registered patients and adults over the age of 21. Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont, who has long been a supporter of legalizing cannabis, noted the occasion in a statement from the governor’s office on Tuesday.

“Today marks a turning point in the injustices caused by the war on drugs, most notably now that there is a legal alternative to the dangerous, unregulated, underground market for cannabis sales,” Lamont said. “Together with our partners in the legislature and our team of professionals at the Department of Consumer Protection, we’ve carefully crafted a securely regulated market that prioritizes public health, public safety, social justice, and equity. I look forward to continuing our efforts to ensure that this industry remains inclusive and safe as it develops.”
