Humboldt Hemp Groundhog Day

The Times Standard reports

Humboldt County’s temporary ban on commercial hemp cultivation will last another six months, the county Board of Supervisors decided today ( 25 June 2019) in a unanimous vote.

While the moratorium is in place, farmers won’t be allowed to legally sell industrial hemp, the variant of cannabis that is federally legal and currently free from the web of laws engulfing the pot industry.

This is the third time the supervisors have extended the temporary ban, in part to buy county officials time to draft hemp laws while preventing farmers from sneaking hemp-derived CBD into the cannabis market without the same regulatory costs.

“It’s pretty clear that we must extend this moratorium if we can get it right,” said 2nd District Supervisor Estelle Fennell.

The county has laid out a plan for implementing a hemp ordinance by December. For public outreach, officials will host a public workshop on Thursday at the Agricultural Center in Eureka.
