Review: Don Shula by nuEra
After a couple years covering the product space in the Illinois market, it’s easy to tell which strains are cultivator’s darlings. Don Shula from nuEra, which has been featured at multiple events and is the label’s sole entry in the High Times Cannabis Cup Sativa Flower category, is a perfect example.
Don Shula is a hybrid cross of The White and Diagonal sourced from Cool Beans Seed Co. This batch of flower tested at 0.71% CBGa, 0.47% THC, 34.09% THCa, and 35.27% total cannabinoids. Indicated terpenes were limonene at 0.92%, b-myrcene at 0.44%, b-caryophyllene at 0.37%, and a-humulene at 0.2%, and 1.93% total cannabinoids.
Two rounded, chunky buds were bright-lime green with thin and wiry rust-colored hairs reaching out from the surface. Visible milky trichomes dotted the surface, but the frost layer was light. Texturally, this flower was spot on with a lively bounceback when squeezed and a light fluffiness in the grinder.
A dense aroma of garlic, mushroom, gas, cream, earth, and hints of true skunk created a complex scent that sat somewhere between cream of mushroom soup and body odor, depending on how deeply I inhaled. These flowers burned smooth and clean with even heavy clouds of smoke carrying almost zero harshness. The smooth smoke delivered a rich garlic, earth, and skunk base complemented by highlights of lemon and pepper.
Much heavier than indicated by the strains inclusion in the Sativa Flower category for the Cup, Don Shula hit as a hybrid at low doses but blossomed into an indica after multiple bongloads. Waves of pressure moved from my arms and legs into my core, becoming a heavy “weighted blanket” sensation. A small boost of creativity and playful openness set in at the beginning of the experience, but this was short lived and as the high passed a foggy haze covered my headspace in the hour after smoking.
