Review: Gary Payton Preroll by Galaxy Labs
No matter how many new labels pop up on dispensary menus, I still get a hit of that “kid in a candy store” feeling when I see something new. That feeling hits harder when the product is from one of the long-awaited craft grow licensees. I recently spotted some of the first releases from Galaxy Labs at Mystic Greenz Decatur and picked up a couple prerolls to review, starting with Gary Payton.
Gary Payton is a hybrid cross of The Y and Snowman. This preroll tested at 1.37% THC, 24.79% THCa, and 26.62% total cannabinoids. Terpenes were 3.74% of the total weight.
This preroll was a standard cone with a Galaxy branded black crutch. The joint was evenly filled with a slightly tucked tip that was easy to pull open, revealing the fresh sage colored ground bud inside. Smooth and evenly burning, this joint needed no pre-work or intervention.
The aroma was strong from the tube and, accompanied by a couple dry pulls, revealed a layered blend of hot diesel, sweet cream, cardamom, roasted nuts, and berries at the finish. The flavor came through clearly with the diesel and cream creating a sweet and sour contrast, while that same berry note from the aroma persisted as the fruity finishing note on the palate. The flavor, while dense, was not sticky and cleared from the palate quickly post exhale.
Gary Payton is the prototypical hybrid, and this preroll exemplified that clearly. A rush of clearheaded and open headspace allowed me to almost immediately think clearly and creatively with ease. By the 15-minute mark though, my energy levels fell off even as the open headspace persisted. The physical profile followed this trajectory as well, opening with some short-lived racy tingles up and down my spine, and then tapering off into a sensation of lightness and muscle relaxation by the half-hour mark.
Overall, this was one of the more flavorful prerolls I’ve had on the Illinois market, and I look forward to sampling more from this new label. For more Illinois News Joint reviews, visit here.
