News Joint Grow Journal 48: Appleberry Crisp, Part II
For the last entry in News Joint Grow Journal 6.0, I return to the first entry, Appleberry Crisp by Nachos & El Sapo. I published the first journal entry earlier than expected because the breeder, Jon Colombini, had just past away, and I wanted to highlight the GoFundMe fundraiser, which is still accepting donations to help his family. For this journal entry, I wanted to highlight this strain as delivering the best final product I’ve grown.
Appleberry Crisp is a cross of Apple Fritter (Lumpy’s cut) and Backshots ((Drunk Driver x London Pound Cake) x London Pound Cake male). I left the first Appleberry Crisp journal entry about a week before chop, mentioning the aroma and how the plant had been easy to grow with little to no maintenance. I eventually chopped on day 65, dried for 12 days, and used glass jars to cure. One aspect of this grow I forgot to mention is that I had my lights set on 12.5 hours of dark and 11.5 hours of light, not because I’m clever but rather because I am the worst at setting light timers. If or how this affected the plant’s aroma, flavor, and effects, I do not know, but I was pleased with all three facets.
The aroma was diverse and changed during the grow, while drying, before cure, and after cure. The first week in the jar, the aroma delivered a sharp, almost bitter, funk mix of piss, rotten apples, and putrid gas that burnt the nostrils. As the buds cured, the aroma kept the tart but savory apple funk but added more sweetness, vanilla butter, and spicy citrus. The flavor also changed with the cure, becoming less savory and adding more sweetness with back notes of sugary berries, nutty spice, and skunky lemons. The exhale carried the gassy and sweet apple funk with interchanging back notes that always left me wanting another taste. Appleberry Crisp was definitely a strain for the flavor chasers.
The effects I expected to be more indica-leaning but instead landed almost right in the middle of the hybrid middle. The strong head high hit with a fast onset and headband feeling, especially around the eyes. A simultaneous mental and physical relaxation built quickly. The head high switched between thought wondering and thoughtlocked but kept a consistent gleefulness and euphoric happiness. The heavy body buzz came in waves until a heavy-blanket feeling settled in. Late in the buzz, a more indica effect took over with some sedation that led into good nights of sleep. Appleberry Crisp also boosted my appetite each time I medicated with it.
Overall, News Joint Grow Journal 6.0 was my most successful grow, especially for flavorful strains, and Appleberry Crisp definitely led the way. The other strains included Golden Putang, Tangie Haze x Oregon Lemon Diesel, and PuTang BX. Stay tuned for Grow Journal 7.0, which should also have some flavorful strains.
