13% of Iowa hemp fields burned due to too high THC

Thirteen percent of hemp fields planted in the U.S. state of Iowa exceeded the THC limit of 0.3% and were burned. State officials said 16 of 119 crop samples tested surpassed the THC barrier. Iowa hemp farmers also reported they struggled with weeds in some fields of hemp, for which the state has not certified any herbicides. Iowa farmers planted hemp on about 680 acres (275 hectares) in 2020, the Iowa Department of Agriculture reported. Iowa’s state hemp program under the 2018 Farm Bill was approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in March 2020.
