Illinois House Bill permits on-site event consumption
Despite the fact that Illinois’ prohibitive laws for on-site cannabis consumption have foiled many event planners from hosting events, Illinois may be set to host more cannabis-friendly events in 2023 than the last three years combined. One way to help expand the amount and variety of cannabis-friendly events would be for Illinois to pass the recently introduced “Bring Your Own Cannabis” bill.
Friday, February 17, Rep. Sonya M. Harper sponsored Illinois House Bill 3939, also known as the Bring Your Own Cannabis bill. HB3939 amends the Counties Code and the Illinois Municipal Code, as well as provides an exemption from a provision of the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act by defining “public accommodation.”
HB3939 provides “that the corporate authorities of a county or municipality may license or regulate businesses operating as a public accommodation that permit the consumption of cannabis on the business premises and that are not regulated under the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act.”
If passed, HB3939 would be a game changer in the way event planners prepare for on-site consumption events. Planners would be able to contact municipalities to ensure proper licenses and permits so that attendees would be allowed to smoke cannabis on business premises, freeing up many legal obstacles that planners currently face.
On the same day as HB3939 was filed with the Clerk, the bill was “Referred to Rules Committee.” Stay tuned for more updates. To learn about cannabis-friendly events in Illinois, visit here.
