Medicinal cannabis – Changes to Special Access Scheme (SAS) and Authorised Prescriber applications
This webinar will explain how medical practitioners can apply to access certain medicinal cannabis medicines via the Authorised Prescriber Established History of use pathway (no ethics committee approval required) and guide you through applying to prescribe ‘unapproved’ medicinal cannabis products by category of active ingredient.
Background
As of 22 November 2021, Special Access Scheme and Authorised Prescriber applications for unapproved medicinal cannabis products will be made by active ingredient under a category based on cannabinoid content, rather than by trade name. This approach allows flexibility in brand substitution when needed, i.e. in the event of product shortage or discontinuation.
Certain medicinal cannabis medicines have been included in the Authorised Prescriber ‘Established history of use’ pathway, by reference to active ingredient categories, dosage forms and indications. Approval from a Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) approval or specialist college endorsement is not required before applying to the TGA to become an Authorised Prescriber of these products.
