The UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is an annual two-week summit bringing together world leaders to address the climate crisis. This year, the UK hosts the event in Glasgow, from the 1st to the 12th of November 2021.
As stakeholders assemble for the summit, one group is aiming to highlight the overlooked environmental credentials of hemp by hosting a fringe event near the climate summit, at St Luke’s in Glasgow’s East End.
Beyond the Green state that hemp should be high on the climate agenda, thanks to its potential to decarbonise multiple industries and combat climate change through carbon sequestration. They also believe hemp is being overlooked as an alternative to everyday poluting materials and want to highlight the benefit of hempcrete, hemp paper, and hemp’s use as an alternative to fossil fuel-derived plastics.
“The time is now for the UK government to legalise hemp for all purposes and unlock the full potential of the most misunderstood plant in the world,” organiser of Beyond the Green Sam Cannon said. “A thriving hemp industry can tackle climate change, produce medicine to help with conditions such as epilepsy and anxiety, boost the economy, create jobs and support developing countries to reduce carbon emissions. What is not to love here?”
Beyond the Green will run from Friday 5th November through to Sunday 7th November, and will host a number of talks and discussions across the weekend by scientists and industry experts on Hemp-based solutions. There will also be live music, art, guest speakers, a hemp market and, a pop-up medical cannabis clinic where patients can speak with experts to understand how to access medical cannabis legally in the UK.
Saturday will feature the launch party of Earth Aid. From the producers of Live Aid, Earth Aid will broadcast headline talent, DJs and live panels and talks to support, promote and enable a more environmentally responsible way of life.
