Durham, NH – A recent University of New Hampshire poll reveals strong support for marijuana legalization among Granite State residents, with New Hampshire as the only state in New England that still prohibits recreational marijuana sales.

Despite the support of 72% of New Hampshire residents revealed in the UNH poll, the most recent bill to legalize recreational marijuana still failed in the State Legislature.

Governor Chris Sununu states he would be willing to sign the legalization bill if it enforced “state control” of marijuana distribution and access.

“Knowing that a majority of our residents support legalization, it is reasonable to assume change is inevitable,” Sununu said in a statement. “To ignore this reality would be shortsighted and harmful. That is why, with the right policy and framework in place, I stand ready to sign a legalization bill that puts the state of New Hampshire in the driver’s seat, focusing on harm reduction — not profits.”

While Governor Sununu’s proposal garners support from the majority of New Hampshire residents, a significant 64% of them believe that the state regulations have no impact on their stance regarding his proposal.

According to the UNH poll, Residents in opposition to Sununu’s proposal either do not want marijuana to be legalized at all or want to legalize marijuana through a different system.
