By Aaron Humes: The recent episode in which more than 30 children were sickened by consuming candies laced with marijuana has led to many recriminations and calls for charges.

However, only one person – Police Department exhibit keeper Mario Bustillos – has been charged in connection with the incident, for ten counts of negligent harm to which he has pleaded not guilty.

The man for whom the candies were allegedly imported, a former police officer, was scheduled to be interviewed but police claim the release of his name spoiled their plans to potentially trap him.

And according to Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, it’s looking tough to nail down whoever else may be involved, as he told the press recently: “There are some of those persons who are involved in the selling. While we do believe that they know that these edibles contained cannabis and, despite that, still sold it to children, it is not going to be easy for us to prove that they knew and so that may pose a hurdle to us. But we’re still looking to the investigation and if we should come across imperative evidence that they had knowledge and, despite that, still sold it to children then they too can be held to account.”

The Commissioner also addressed claims the gummies were improperly stored at the exhibit room at Queen Street Police Station before being disposed of and then reintroduced to the public: “The edibles or whatever…
