The Cannabis Act , which sets out the legal framework for controlling the production, distribution, sale and possession of cannabis across Canada, came into force on October 17, 2018. On March 5, 2020, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a report to Congress on how the agency intends to regulate hemp-derived CBD (Hemp CBD). The report was accompanied by a press release from the FDA. The report states that the FDA will continue to work on a regulatory framework for Hemp CBD but in the meantime will provide enforcement priorities that will provide transparency to the industry.

The U.S. cannabis industry is still in its infancy, even though states began engaging with legalization in one form or another in the late 1990s. Lack of specific regulation cannot prevent the planting of cannabis for medicinal and industrial purposes. There has been a lot of discussion regarding the planting of cannabis in Brazil because the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency – Anvisa published in December last year the RDC No. 327/19 to allow the manufacture, import and commercialization of cannabis-based products for medicinal purposes.

WASHINGTON – Today, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Department of Justice announced action to further expand opportunities for scientific and medical research on marijuana in the United States. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking provides details on the proposed process and was filed for public inspection today, March 20. The proposed rule will be published in the Federal Register on Monday, March 23.

The outgoing CEO, Peter Horvath, came to the Columbus, Ohio, company after leading company strategy for retail giants such as Victoria’s Secret, American Eagle Outfitters, DSW and Limited Brands.

On March 15, 2020, Governor Charlie Baker announced further actions to support residents, health care providers, and small businesses during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak, including an Order Expanding Access to Telehealth Services and to Protect Health Care Providers which allows for the provision of telehealth (telephone and live video) to facilitate patient access to medical services.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. says founder and former chief executive Terry Booth has sold nearly 12.2 million shares in the company into the open market. Reports Lakeland Today. The company says the sale is in connection with a restructuring of the company earlier this year that saw the elimination of 500 jobs and Booth’s retirement from the company. Aurora announced Booth’s departure from the company in February.

Marijuana Moment reports. Federal workers at the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) aren’t adhering to internal shipping guidelines after discovering illegal marijuana packages in the mail, and seized cannabis is being lost—or stolen—in the shuffle. The agency’s failure to take steps to cover up the plant’s pungent smell is a key reason. That’s according to a new audit from the USPS’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG), which analyzed the agency’s handling of suspected marijuana shipments.

Atalo is at least the third hemp company in Kentucky to file for bankruptcy this year. Another industrial hemp company has filed for bankruptcy at a time when the burgeoning industry is struggling to find its bearings in the face of numerous challenges. Atalo Holdings Inc., based in Winchester, Ky., has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection, mainly citing issues with capital.
