Variety of flowers and foliage brightening up the centre of town and delighting passers-by.

A concerted effort is being made to keep Gladstone Road’s flowerbeds looking interesting with new species introduced every season.

This summer is no different with a colourful variety of flowers and foliage delighting passers-by and brightening up Gisborne’s central business district.

Gisborne District Council amenity and horticulture supervisor Maria Ballester tries to introduce one or two new species each season to keep the planter boxes interesting.

It is also a good way to trial new varieties, she says.

“Every season I try to mix different varieties of plants, heights, colours and textures to make it a bit more fun so it doesn’t look the same every year.

“I also consider which plants perform well from past experience when designing what is going to be planted next.”

The newcomer this season is the dahlia dwarf mix in multiple colours.

Planting is done at the beginning of spring and autumn with annual flowers usually lasting for two seasons.

Plants are provided by a local flower grower and wholesale plant nursery Zealandia.
