Ways to Store Your Psychoactive Goodies

Psychotropic medications are used to treat mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, dysregulated eating, obsessions and compulsions, and other conditions. They can affect behavior, mood, perception, and thoughts. These include various prescription drugs as well as substances such as magic mushrooms and cannabis.

Purchasing cannabis and shrooms can be a bit challenging, depending on where you live. For example, while it may not be the case elsewhere, you can purchase magic mushrooms from an online shroom dispensary in Canada, as long as you are not a minor.

However, you have to know how to store the substances correctly so they can stay fresh for a long time.

How to store cannabis?

  • Stash boxes

Weed stash boxes can be super classy, and they usually contain compartments to hold different strains of weed as well as various tools. They’re usually made out of bamboo, teak, acacia, cherry, mahogany, or walnut wood. They won’t affect the smell or flavor of your buds.

Remember to avoid cedar as it leaves a cedar taste. Some boxes regulate the humidity using either humidity packs or a rechargeable bead system to ensure your buds stay fresh and long-lasting. The best part is most of them can perfectly blend in with your furniture.

  • Mason jars

Quart-sized glass jars can be found everywhere from home improvement stores to grocery stores. When it comes to storing cannabis, they’re perfect because they help maintain potency by protecting the buds from air and moisture. Note that a cool, dark place is the most popular and effective way to store buds in mason jars.

The glass jars will also completely contain the smell while preventing the buds from being crushed during handling. Make sure the jars are at least ¾ full so there’s not much air being stored in with the weed. When stored in airtight glass jars, the buds can maintain potency for up to a year.

  • Vacuum sealing

Before long-term storage, you can use a vacuum sealer to take the air out of the container. When vacuum sealing bags, you tend to get the best results, although some growers use these machines to vacuum seal their mason jars as well. If you plan to store the buds for a long time, you can use this method.

However, even if you seal them, make sure to follow all the steps including keeping them in a dark, cool place and away from moisture. For example, if the buds are still wet, vacuum sealing will not be as effective. Note that the ultra-cheap way to vacuum seal the buds is to get a stash jar that will create a vacuum when you close the top.

How to store mushrooms?

  • Mason jars, ziplock bags, and vacuum-sealed bags

The method of storing shrooms in a mason jar is one of the simplest and cheapest methods. The jars are designed to create an airtight seal keeping oxygen out of the container. If you’re opting for the best results, store your jars in a cool, dry, dark place, such as a cupboard or the basement. You’ll be able to get at least six months of storage without any noticeable loss of potency.

Ziplock bags offer a similar level of protection as mason jars, however, the downside is that they can sometimes leak. Vacuum-sealed bags are considered the next evolution of the ziplock bag. They remove all the air from the bag and seal it with heat. These bags won’t leak, and they protect the magic mushrooms from humidity and oxygen.

  • Chocolate or honey

Surprisingly, chocolate is great for preservation. Simply grind the dried shrooms into a powder, melt the chocolate on the stove, and mix in the powdered mushrooms as the chocolate is cooling. It’s important not to heat the shrooms directly as it may damage the active ingredients. The chocolate will seal the shrooms from the elements, and also block UV light and oxygen.

You can also use honey to preserve your magic mushrooms. Place them in an empty mason jar and cover the whole bunch in fresh, organic honey. Make sure the honey covers the shrooms by at least 1/2 inch (2 cm). When in storage, the active ingredients in the shrooms will diffuse into the honey, so when it’s time to use it, you can simply consume the honey directly.

  • Capsules

Since shrooms don’t taste very good, many people decide to purchase them in capsule form or create their own capsules at home. They do a great job of preserving the shrooms for extended periods, only if a few conditions are met.

The most important aspect of storing shrooms in capsules is that you ensure every capsule is as full as possible. Empty spaces in the capsule might expose the contents to oxygen, which can cause them to degrade much faster. Generally, you can store capsules for 6-12 months without any noticeable loss of potency.

In closing

Imagine how disappointing it would be to spend so much time and money on weed and shrooms just to spoil them with bad storage. You need to know how to store them the right way so they stay fresh and you can use them for a long time. Remember to keep them in a cool, dry, and dark location for best results, and write the date you stored them on the containers.
