CA: Going After Illegal Growers: Shasta County receives $200k for cannabis eradication program

February 15, 2022 — Eradication of large marijuana grows has already started in Shasta County, and Sheriff Michael Johnson says this is only the beginning.

After supervisors accepted $200,000 in federal money for marijuana eradication activities on Tuesday, he updated them, saying more than 19,000 plants have been pulled up, almost 3,000 lbs. of processed buds have been seized, along with almost $57,000 cash, 19 guns, and 6 people arrested.

The grow season is just starting, so he says they’re going after people trying to transport last season’s crop out of the county.

“So, here’s what we’re doing right now. We’re trying to run some interdiction since it’s all harvested now and they’re shipping it out of state and cash is coming in. So we’re going to try and run some partial interdictions, and we’re running some vehicle interdictions as well,” said Sheriff Johnson.

“My fellow deputies are the most valuable assets we have,” said ‘Joe Doaks’ of Shasta & Siskiyou County Citizens Against Marijuana. “We should use every available technology to protect them from the chemicals in the cannabis grows and the evil people that are blood-sucking our youth for money.”

Sheriff Johnson is planning on beefing up the marijuana enforcement team to five full-time employees. He says more team members means more investigation, which means more arrests.
