There are few medications that are as hyped or as polarising as medical marijuana.

Depending on who you’re talking to, the plant is either an illegal and addictive narcotic, or a source of miracle treatments for everything from epilepsy, to back pain; there even some who claim it can help with depression.

But after years of research and billions of dollars of investment from philanthropists and pharmaceutical companies, is medicinal cannabis living up to all the claims that have been made about it?
