While cannabis remains illegal in Ecuador, the country has taken steps to decriminalize its use and possession. 

Cannabis is illegal in Ecuador for both medical and recreational use. Possession, cultivation, sale, and trafficking of cannabis are strictly prohibited, and those caught violating these laws can face criminal charges and imprisonment.

However, in 2019, Ecuador’s Constitutional Court decriminalized the possession of small amounts of weed for personal use. Under this ruling, individuals caught with up to 10 grams will not face criminal charges but may be subject to fines or community service.

Medical cannabis in Ecuador

While cannabis remains illegal for medical use in Ecuador, the country has expressed interest in exploring the potential medical benefits of the drug. In 2019, Ecuador’s National Assembly passed a resolution that called for the creation of a commission to study the use of cannabis-based medicines to treat a range of medical conditions.

In addition, the country has a long history of using traditional medicines, including herbal remedies, and some individuals in Ecuador have reportedly used cannabis to self-medicate for various medical conditions.

The country does not have a significant cannabis culture, and there are no major weed-related events or festivals. However, some individuals in Ecuador have reportedly been working to promote the potential medical benefits of cannabis and advocate for its legalization.
