Tripura: Opposition leader Animesh Debbarma bats for legalising marijuana cultivation | North East India NewsPosted by On

Tripura Opposition leader Animesh Debbarma recently suggested that the state government should legalise marijuana cultivation. He further said that such a move would enhance the income of the cultivators as well as augment state revenue.

Notably, his statement came after the Tripura government intensified its drive to destroy marijuana plants across the state.

“Marijuana cultivation can be used for medical purposes and to improve our economy. It can be legalised. It will enhance our revenue,” Debbarma told reporters in Agartala.

He said a discussion should be held in the Assembly on the matter.

Debbarma further stated that the BJP government has acted against the sale of illicit liquor but has also given licences to scores of liquor shops.

Festive offer

Since the BJP-led government came to power in Tripura in 2018, it has been highly active against the smuggling of drugs under its ‘Nasha Mukt Tripura’ initiative.

The government has claimed that Tripura now ranks first in the Northeast in terms of seizure and destruction of drugs.
