Evidence base for UK drugs policy examined 17 May 2022

The Home Affairs Committee continues its inquiry into the UK’s drugs policy examining the scientific evidence base underpinning the UK’s approach. The Committee takes evidence from members of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, which advises the Government on drugs policy, and other academic experts.

Panel two: Scientists from the ACMD acting in their capacity as government advisors on drugs

  • Dr Owen Bowden-Jones, Chair of the ACMD and consultant in addiction psychiatry and Honorary Professor at University College London
  • Dr Emily Finch, Co-Chair of the ACMD Recovery Committee and Clinical Director of the Addictions Clinical Academic Group and a Consultant Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Trust
  • Professor Roger Knaggs, Chair of the ACMD Technical Committee and Associate Professor in Clinical Pharmacy practice at the University of Nottingham

The session will examine how scientific evidence informs the policy and legislative framework used to control access to drugs in the UK. This will include the classification system and the different approaches to different types of drugs including psychoactive substances and cannabis-based products.

It will consider the potential harms and benefits of controlled drugs, and the treatments available for drug addiction and whether they are adequate.
