Australia Indicates It Is About To Get Much Tougher On Imported Medical Cannabis Products

The findings of a Senate report are already a month late ( 26 March 2020) Being realistic there are far more important health issues in the table now so we’d not expect to see findings published until Q.3 of this year. Medical Cannabis, quite rightly, will be taking a backseat to Coronavirus health issues . We’d suggest that medical cannabis will now stay in stasis for at least 12 months with tougher import controls being the standard setting for the forseeable future. All talk of medical cannabis stocks actually performing on the ASX have been swiftly axed by events.

MJ Biz report

The regulatory body for therapeutic goods in Australia plans to expand the number of quality inspections involving imported medical cannabis in the coming months.

Over 90% of prescriptions and approvals are being supplied by imported products, industry group Medicinal Cannabis Industry Australia (MCIA) previously told Marijuana Business Daily.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) says applications for medical cannabis authorizations have risen to some 3,000 per month.

The audits will include laboratory testing to verify that cannabinoid content is consistent with product declarations. The TGA is vowing to test a larger number of products for compliance with the Therapeutic Goods Order No. 93 (Standard for Medicinal Cannabis, TGO 93), it said in a notice this week.

The TGA says importers and suppliers of medical cannabis products are legally responsible for declaring and ensuring conformity with TGO 93.

“While manufacturers of imported unapproved medicines are not required to undergo GMP inspections or clearances unless further steps of manufacture occur in Australia, importers or suppliers of products that do not comply with applicable standards, such as TGO 93, may be subject to a range of regulatory compliance actions, including civil and criminal penalties,” the TGA said in a statement.

Australia’s Senate is conducting a formal inquiry into issues involving patient access to medical cannabis.
