DMRE Rules Out Zama Zamas’ Involvement in JHB CBD Explosion

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) has clarified that there are no links between the tragic explosion in Johannesburg City Centre, which claimed one life and injured over 40 people, and the notorious illegal miners known as Zama Zamas.
The incident occurred when Bree Street in the JHB CBD collapsed due to an underground explosion.
Initial speculations pointed to an underground gas pipeline as the cause, but eGoli gas dismissed this claim.

There were also suspicions about the involvement of Zama Zamas, known for operating without adherence to safety regulations.
Investigations Underway: In response to the devastating incident, the DMRE released a statement addressing the situation.
They expressed their confidence in the ongoing investigations led by relevant authorities, including the Gauteng Provincial government and the City of Johannesburg, to determine the true cause of the tragedy.
The DMRE emphasized that the area where the explosion occurred does not house any old mines.
As the regulator of legitimate mining operations in South Africa, the department ensures compliance with legal provisions for all licensed mining activities.
