IRTA and Andorra Research and Innovation will define a model for the cultivation and industrial transformation of this plant in the country

Andorra Research and Innovation and the Institute for Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA) have signed an agreement this Friday to provide technical consulting services with the aim of analyzing and defining a model for the cultivation and industrial transformation of medicinal cannabis in Andorra. It is a commission from the Andorran government to analyze the opportunities and viability of the cultivation of this plant in the Principality and define a model of cultivation and industrial transformation for medicinal uses. The execution of the works will take about four months and will include a pilot project that takes into account the actions to define a basic structure for the production of medicinal cannabis extracts and the necessary infrastructure.

IRTA has been working for more than ten years on various research and development projects related to the scientific and technological potential of the therapeutic use of cannabis. In this sense, it will provide Andorra Recerca e Innovación and the Andorran government with its knowledge, experience and resources to carry out the corresponding work. “Cannabis can be a key crop for the economy, and we believe that in Andorra the necessary conditions exist to produce quality and so that it can be profitable,” said Josep Usall, general director of IRTA.

Thus, for four months a pilot project will be carried out that will analyze a basic structure for the production of medicinal cannabis extracts and study the viability of the cultivation. A project will also be carried out to define the necessary infrastructure and the possible positive impacts that the cultivation of this plant may have on the agricultural and economic diversification of Andorra, as well as the emergence of new economic sectors, will be analyzed.

The agreement also includes making a proposal for positioning in research work in Andorra in relation to this field. Likewise, a face-to-face meeting is planned in Andorra with each of the working groups, as well as a day to present the results report and final works, as explained by IRTA.
