As the world went into lockdown in the COVID spring of 2020, a company in Hawaii burst onto the hemp and cannabis industry scene as one of the first brands to focus on rare cannabinoids. Aptly named, Rare Cannabinoid Company has now firmly established itself as an industry leader, offering a huge range of pure cannabinoid isolates and specially formulated blends.

Rare Cannabinoid Company offers one of the most comprehensive suites of naturally occurring cannabinoid tinctures and gummies available anywhere.

Rare Cannabinoid Company offers one of the most comprehensive suites of naturally occurring cannabinoid tinctures and gummies available anywhere: THCV, CBDV, CBGA, CBDA, CBC, CBG, CBN, delta-9 THC, and terpene blends of myrcene, limonene, linalool, carene, pinene, and caryophyllene.

“As soon as the research and extraction of rare cannabinoids became available, we knew this was an industry game-changer,” said company co-founder Jennifer Carlile.

“CBD and THC offer so many benefits, but there are so many more cannabinoids, each with its own unique effects,” she said.

“We started with CBN for sleep, CBG for discomfort, mood-enhancing CBC, and we were the first to produce purified THCV tinctures,” she said.

Cannabinoids for appetite suppression, mood enhancement, and more?

THCV, short for tetrahydrocannabivarin, acts like a stimulant, boosting energy and suppressing appetite. With many Americans trying to eat less and exercise more, the brand’s THCV oil tincture, THCV CBD blend, and high-strength THCV gummies are consistently their most popular products.

Their new delta-9 THC Mood Gummies are also incredibly popular. They are the first full spectrum gummies to contain hemp-derived delta-9 THC with high levels of CBC (cannabichromene) for mood enhancement and CBD for stress resilience. CBC elevates levels of the brain’s “bliss” molecule anandamide. When combined with relaxing delta-9 THC, and balanced with CBD,  it offers a whole new state of bliss.

“We may not be able to bring you to Hawaii, but we hope these gummies will make you feel like you’re in paradise,” said Carlile.

With a reputation as a company of “firsts,” Rare Cannabinoid Company was also the first and still only to offer a purified CBDV oil tincture. CBDV, or cannabidivarin, has shown promise based on mouse models for potential therapeutic effects on common behavioral symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder. This has sparked further research interest on CBDV, including this clinical trial aimed at studying the safety and efficacy of using CBDV as a therapeutic for irritability in children with autism spectrum disorder.

“Each rare cannabinoid affects the human endocannabinoid system in a different way. So, some appeal to a wide audience, such as CBG (cannabigerol), which helps with soreness and swelling after exercise, or CBN (cannabinol) which promotes restful sleep,”  said Carlile.

“Other cannabinoids, like CBDV, are still in the early stages of research for more particular potential uses,” she said. “Many of our customers are highly knowledgeable about cannabinoids, do their research, and then ask us to produce specific products,” she said.

CBGA, CBDA, and CBD COVID-19 studies

A prime example of this receptive process comes from when this COVID-19 study sparked interest in CBGA and CBDA. At the same time, animal studies and real-world data suggested CBD may help prevent COVID-19. Meanwhile, this U.K. phase 2 clinical study is testing CBD for Long COVID. Each of those studies made worldwide headlines and customers began asking Rare Cannabinoid Company for a CBGA, CBDA, and CBD oil. The company responded by quickly formulating the first immune support blend to contain CBGA, CBDA, and full-spectrum Hawaiian CBD.

The company was also the first to produce terpene-only tinctures. Naturally occurring in cannabis and hemp plants similar to cannabinoids, terpenes are aromatic oils that help give different cannabis strains their unique scents, tastes, and effects.

“Again, our customers were asking us for specific terpene blends so we created one for relaxation that includes linalool and myrcene and can be combined with our CBN (cannabinol) gummies or oils for sleep, and another for discomfort relief that works well with CBG (cannabigerol) for soreness and joint health.”

Lab-testing and safety

“Many cannabinoids are still in the very early phases of scientific research and testing, so we are not making any medical claims about them. We simply believe that when people are actively looking for these cannabinoids, they should have access to legal, clean, safe, lab-tested products,” she said.

Both Carlile and the other half of Rare Cannabinoid Company’s co-founding team, her husband, Jared Dalgamouni, are quick to note their absolute dedication to trust and transparency.

“Being the first to create a product does not mean cutting corners or rushing things out. All of our products are made in a cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices)-certified facility and undergo multiple third-party lab tests with results posted online and via QR code on our packaging,” said Dalgamouni.

“What we say is in an oil or gummy is what you get”

“What we say is in an oil or gummy is what you get,” he said, noting his shock and anger at other companies’ fake or incorrect lab reports.

“We’ve seen multiple lab reports from other well-known brands that claim to have THCV or CBN but are actually selling delta-8 THC. This is extremely dangerous as delta-8 THC is psychoactive and could put people in very dangerous situations. It’s also a much cheaper product.”

“Please read the lab report for each batch of every product you purchase,” he said.

How did Rare Cannabinoid Company start?

Carlile and Dalgamouni initially became interested in the industry after seeing the benefits of cannabis firsthand through multiple family members and friends. Hemp-derived CBD (cannabidiol) especially appealed to them for its wellness properties without psychoactive effects.

The couple, who were born and raised in Hawaii, had been living in London, UK, for 15 years when they decided to move back home for a better quality of life for their young children.

“I got very interested in CBD around 2015-2016 and visited multiple hemp farms and cannabis dispensaries across the U.S. Mainland,” said Dalgamouni.

As Hawaiian hemp production began, they started a luxury lifestyle CBD wellness brand called Hawaiian Choice in 2017. All products still contain broad-spectrum Hawaiian CBD and are infused with organic or wild-gathered island fruits, essential oils, or honey. Their CBD products are very popular at premium Hawaiian resorts and spas and are carried in more than 250 locations across the United States and Japan.

“After a few years, people started hearing about rare cannabinoids and asking us where to get CBN and CBG,” he said.

“We looked into it and realized that there was an entire world of cannabinoids and terpenes that weren’t explored yet, so we decided to be the first.”

CBD 2.0

Like CBD and THC, rare cannabinoids are compounds naturally found in hemp and cannabis. However, they occur in such small amounts naturally that they couldn’t be extracted in large enough quantities to be commercially viable until very recently. For example, THCV was so rare that strain hunters traveled to the Congo River region in Africa to search for landrace cannabis sativa plants high in THCV. One researcher from the project lost his life to malaria as recently as 2017. Thankfully, advances in breeding and technology have made it possible to extract larger quantities of THCV and other rare cannabinoids.

CBD went from virtually unknown to everywhere within the span of a couple of years, and rare cannabinoids are now seeing similar exponential growth.

“With each cannabinoid offering such unique effects, we realized that by creating an apothecary of single extracts and pure, strong gummies, people could mix and match them according to their specific wellness needs,” Dalgamouni said.

CBD went from virtually unknown to everywhere within the span of a couple of years, and rare cannabinoids are now seeing similar exponential growth.

“I remember when my “soccer mom” friends were afraid to try CBD,” said Carlile.

“Now, they’re combining rare cannabinoids and sharing their blends on social media,” she said with a laugh. “It’s like they took their love of mixing and matching essential oils for anxiety, sleep, or immune support, and converted it to cannabinoids,” she said. “Our gummies taste so good, it’s easy to fall in love with them, too,” she said.

Mix and match rare cannabinoids

“Everyone’s needs are unique, so there’s no one-size-fits-all cannabinoid,” said Carlile. By creating a full apothecary of cannabinoids, customers can mix and match oils and gummies depending on the time of day or how they’re feeling.

For patients looking for cannabinoids for specific ailments, Rare Cannabinoid Company has a list and map of independent expert advisors on its website. These third-party cannabis doctors, nurses, and clinics see patients in-office and via telehealth appointments and can offer more personalized medical care.

In addition to choosing specific cannabinoids for one’s needs, it’s always ideal to enhance them with a full-spectrum CBD for the entourage effect, whereby each cannabinoid offers a greater effect when taken with others than it would on its own.

“Personally, I take a THCV gummy or a couple of sprays of THCV oil every morning before working out,” said Carlile, noting that she made significant personal goal-weight progress within the first few months of taking THCV daily and being conscious about healthy food choices.

“We hope our products can help everyone feel good”

“Before bed, I take a mix of CBN, full-spectrum Hawaiian CBD, and/or our Relax Terpenes. This has made a huge difference in helping me fall asleep faster and to sleep deeply without feeling groggy in the morning.”

“The other cannabinoids I take on an as-needed basis. For example, I take CBG if I’m sore after working out or CBC to give me a mental lift if I’m feeling down.”

“I love being the ultimate guinea pig for all of our products,” she joked.

“My medicine cabinet looks like a cannabinoid product display wall, but at 43 I’ve never felt so healthy!”

“We hope our products can help everyone feel good,” she said.
