Australian General Election, Legalise Cannabis Party Candidates Profiles: Michelle Stanvic ACT

The 4th of our candidate profiles

A few weeks to go and a general election is in full swing in Australia.

This time last year the Legalise Cannabis Party in Australia was comprised of a number of disparate state-based organisations.
This year, the party for the first time , is presenting a unified national front for the 2022 general election and as they have virtually received no coverage from the mainstream media, here at Cannabis Law Report, we thought it might be an idea to get to know the candidates on their own terms.
We have forwarded all candidates in the party exactly the same questionnaire with a number of questions that will give readers and voters an opportunity to learn a bit more about their candidates, who are in the main, standing for the Australian Senate

YOUR BIO

I have been a Registered Nurse since 2002 and I have Master of Palliative Care in Aged Care by research which I completed in 2017, titled,
“A Scoping review of the therapeutic use of cannabinoids in managing chronic non-cancer pain in older people”
Although it was not published the paper did earn me a distinction and I believe I was the first RN to do any research along those lines at Flinders University.

WHAT MADE YOU STAND?

After learning about cannabis and the endocannabinoid system for nearly 10 years. Through my personal experiences, many patient interactions and my own education. I decided to join Legalise Cannabis Australia to take up the fight on behalf of Australians because I strongly believe the laws are doing more harm than good.

IF YOU ARE VOTED IN WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE LIFE OF THE PARLIAMENT FOR CANNABIS

I am seeking total Cannabis law reform and to achieve a legal and regulated cannabis market. In particular I would like to achieve the following:
Descheduling cannabis . Currently it is  been dumped into the illicit drug category and given its therapeutic effects and ability to reduce harms this has to change.
Introduce public health education and awareness programs about the preventative benefits of cannabis and hemp as a plant-based diet and medicine.
An immediate moratorium on all arrests of cannabis consumers
Reforms to  allow consumers and/or carers to grow cannabis in their gardens or indoors.
All historical personal-use cannabis criminal records to be expunged.
Reform of drug driving laws where impairment, not presence, is tested.
Road Safety laws to be amended to allow for a defence for medicinal users
State-regulated affordable testing facilities available for producers, growers, and consumers
I would like to see the establishment of a state based, compassionate access scheme subsidising corporate medicine, as proposed by the Barriers to Medical Cannabis Inquiry in March 2020.

WHAT OTHER POLITICAL ISSUES WILL YOU HIGHLIGHT

I am interested in Social Law and Health Reform as well as human rights issues.
