It is lawful to possess, buy and sell marijuana in the state of New York and in New York City. The city’s Office of Cannabis Management is responsible for licensing and managing all marijuana issues. Law enforcement isn’t involved. The police do not go in the stores.
Based on this story, it appears that no one follows the rules. Abandoned storefronts have become pot dispensaries doing a cash business. Some dispensaries have opened across the street from schools. Perhaps state and local officials in Wisconsin should make a trip to New York City to see how things are going and contact Tolentino to ask for her thoughts and advice.
