Polynesian MP Nicole Sanquer has tabled a bill to authorize experimentation with therapeutic cannabis in the archipelago.
Its proposal takes up the main lines of the experiment currently taking place in metropolitan France, namely two years of testing with a limited number of patients and for indications defined upstream, before opening up to a broader legalization of the medical use of cannabis.
And Nicole Sanquer explains: “There are a lot of patients who are waiting, because we must not kid ourselves, there are a lot of people who treat themselves with cannabis oils or balm. “
The Polynesian project should win unanimity. The opening to medical cannabis was in fact in the Cap 2025 recovery plan of the local government and the President of French Polynesia announced at the beginning of April of his intention to “open up the possibility of the cultivation of cannabis for therapeutic use ”in its territory.
The deputy Moetai Brotherson had also called on the Minister of Health Olivier Véran so that Polynesia could participate in this experiment. Yes, “in principle”, replied the minister, specifying that health is a competence of the Polynesian government.
Once the bill has been passed, the conditions for implementing this experiment will have to be the subject of a draft deliberation by the Polynesian assembly to conclude the legislative part. Then, it will pass “in the Council of Ministers for the regulatory part, with in particular a modification of the deliberation on poisonous substances, an agreement with the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and the approval of a” reference medical center ” , to then determine the number of Polynesian patients who could be included in the study.
6 months before the end of the experiment, the Polynesian government would be responsible for making an initial assessment and studying a more sustainable device on therapeutic cannabis.
