Cannabis sales set record in 2023, best-ever month in December

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Massachusetts saw record sales of adult-use cannabis for 2023 including the most sales in December.

According to a news release from the Cannabis Control Commission, marijuana businesses in Massachusetts set a new annual gross sales record in 2023, of more than $1.56 billion. It was an increase of approximately 5 percent over 2022 with $78 million.

December ranked the best-ever month with $140.1 million in sales since the first two adult-use retail stores opened in November 2018. The Commission notes that there are 338 total marijuana retailers and 21 businesses allowed to offer delivery in the state as of December 31, 2023.

Medical marijuana sales totaled $225 million in 2023 for more than 97,000 patients from 103 medical marijuana treatment centers. According to Massachusetts law, patients 21 years of age or older may possess, a 60-day supply or up to 10 ounces.
