We are pleased to announce that we will be participating in the Inaugural Hemp Leaders Coalition meeting in Fort Lauderdale June 24-25. Our own Jeff Greene will be speaking about the pitfalls and advantages of selling products on Amazon, which is a hot-button item for hemp products. We are happy to continue increased attendance at in-person events since the pandemic. We remain eager to learn, help, collaborate, and optimize the industry. As the hemp industry evolves, products and methods of use continue to change as well. Far from the days of the THC-chasers, a lucrative market has sprung up around smokeable hemp flower. Thankfully, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has done a great job in the smooth regulation of this modality. After a rough first year for many hemp cultivators in Florida, many are now praising the State’s efforts in regulating and promoting the plant as an agricultural commodity. Much of this can be attributed to FDACS Commissioner Nikki Fried, who has helped facilitate the Rise of the Persecuted Hemp Plant. Upon USDA modification of hemp rules, Fried said “I appreciate the USDA’s implementation of important improvements to its hemp program regulations, and for hearing and addressing the majority of our concerns regarding certain provisions previously issued – providing both flexibility and certainty to our producers.”
Commissioner Fried anticipates growing acreage to increase from anywhere between 100,000 and 300,000 acres within the State.
It is important to keep a balanced perspective, however, as there are many battles still to be fought in the struggle to bring hemp to prominence. Consumers must remain educated and vigilant, as lawmakers and law enforcement alike scramble to grapple with the implications of the 2018 Farm Bill. Many legal hemp products still contain trace amounts of THC- sufficient to fail a drug test. This was the case for an MTA bus driver that was fired after a failed drug screening from what he attributed to a hemp tea claiming to contain 0.0% THC. This further highlights the necessity to research quality products that have been properly tested by a third-party accredited testing lab.
