As more jurisdictions reformed weed laws over the past decade, scientific interest in the plant has increased exponentially, specifically on its therapeutic potential.

Scientists have published over 23,000 peer-reviewed papers on cannabis since 2010, with the number of studies increasing each year. By comparison, researchers published less than 3,000 weed studies from 1990 to 1999, and fewer than 2,000 in the 1980s.

The majority of research on hemp-derived CBD, compiled by the U.S. NLM at PubMed.gov, weren’t included in the tally. But the total number of CBD studies surged as well, to a record 1,052 in 2020, up from just 163 in 2000.

Research in 2020 ranged widely from how cannabis may help with opioid addiction, PTSD and pain, to the affects of cannabinoids on drivers — and even how rats share humans’ affinity for THC.
