bc announces new cannabis sales program

On Sunday, September 20, 2020, A day before calling for an early election, the BC Government announced a new cannabis sales program in favour of BC Craft Cannabis.

This new Cannabis Sales Program a result of suggestions from Cannabis Producers

The sales program is said to be the result of input and recommendations from long-time cannabis growers, Indigenous leaders, and other stakeholders. This cannabis sales program will launch in 2022. Small-scale producers, including nurseries, will be given the option to sell directly to Licensed Retailers and participate in on-site cannabis sales. This new option will give small scale cannabis producers and nurseries the ability to sell their own products from “farm-gate” stores, at their actual production site.

“We’ve heard clearly how important these kinds of sales are for smaller cannabis producers trying to get a foothold in a market currently dominated by larger players,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General. “Now more than ever, our government is committed to supporting B.C. businesses and encouraging people to buy local, and that includes creating conditions for cannabis businesses of all sizes to succeed.”

Indigenous Shelf Space Program

Set to launch this year, this program will highlight the products produced by BC Indigenous Growers and Producers. What that will actually look like has yet to be announced.

“These steps will help grow the legal cannabis industry in B.C. in an inclusive way,” said David Eby, Attorney General. “By making it easier to know more about the product, those who choose to use cannabis can make careful decisions about what types of products they want to buy and what sectors of the industry they want to support.”
