Hoban Law Diversity & Cannabis

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Written by: Eric Singular

It is no secret that the prohibition of cannabis disproportionately impacted people of color. Today, over 40,000 people are incarcerated in the United States for marijuana-related offenses, with a disproportionate amount being people of color.

Now more than ever, it is crucial to make positive changes in the workplace. It is imperative for the legal industry, like all industries, to take a genuine stand against discrimination and actively strive for social diversity and inclusion. At the Hoban Law Group, we are committed to taking steps toward a progressive future.

Many states that have legalized marijuana are implementing social equity programs to ensure that people of color, and those with prior offenses, be afforded an opportunity to participate, meaningfully, in this burgeoning industry. Our firm is continuing to identify pro bono opportunities that have the potential to exact social and racial justice as it relates to cannabis. It’s the least we can do as attorneys and participants in this commercial industry.

In addition, HLG is contributing to the American Bar Association (ABA) Legal Opportunity Scholarship fund, which encourages racial and ethnic minority students to pursue a law degree and to provide financial assistance for them to attend and complete law school.

HLG has long been a supporter of the Minority Cannabis Business Association (MCBA), the first 501(c)(6) not-for-profit business league created specifically to increase diversity in the cannabis industry.

We don’t have all the answers but we all have an obligation to work for change.

We have set our intention and know that achieving progress takes time and hard work. As cannabis social equity programs evolve around the country, we are eager to help advance their cause as we learn more about where they succeed and where they need to be improved.
