Ending Cannabis Criminalization Is Police Reform

Today, members of the House Judiciary Committee marked up the Justice in Policing Act, which seeks to amend federal guidance over certain law enforcement activities. Many of the bill’s components are steps in a positive direction, such as banning “No-Knock” drug raids by law enforcement. This is a recommendation that many on NORML’s Legal Committee have long advocated for, as the proliferation of these raids have often led to tragic results.

La. Governor signs medical cannabis expansion

Good news! Last week, Gov. John Bel Edwards signed a bill ( HB 819 ) that will allow doctors to recommend medical cannabis for any medical condition the physician “considers debilitating to an individual patient” that the physician is qualified to treat. Currently, patients can only receive a recommendation for cannabis if they have a medical condition that is specifically listed.

New Jersey: Assembly Lawmakers Approve Marijuana Decriminalization Legislation

On Thursday, members of the New Jersey state Assembly approved a substitute version of A1897 by a 63-10 vote, with five abstentions. As currently written, the measure decriminalizes the possession and distribution of up to two ounces of marijuana by adults — making these activities punishable by a $50 fine. Those found to be in violation of the law will no longer be arrested or saddled with a criminal record.

CBD from Hemp Associated with Improved HDL Cholesterol Levels

According to a new study, hemp-derived CBD oil extract is associated with improved HDL cholesterol levels. The study was published in Journal of Dietary Supplements: It’s titled Effects of hemp extract on markers of wellness, stress resilience, recovery and clinical biomarkers of safety in overweight, but otherwise healthy subjects. For the study researchers examined the health effects of CBD extract (15 mg per serving) from hemp and compared it against a placebo.
