Massachusetts: Cannabis Control Commission Plans Ahead For 2020

A New Chapter for the Cannabis Control Commission

Since its establishment, the Cannabis Control Commission (Commission) has worked tirelessly toward the goal of becoming a world-class agency committed to embodying modern, 21st century government. We strive to conduct business openly and transparently, leverage state-of-the-art technology, foster a great place to work, develop and enforce effective regulations, educate the public, and conduct robust research.

On each of these fronts, we are proud to share the work we have accomplished to date.

The Commission is in a new season of its operations, as evidenced by:

  • The promulgation of new regulations for Massachusetts’ adult and medical use of marijuana programs;
  • Launching the first phase of our Open Data Platform, which sets a new standard for how government learns from and shares information;
  • Educating the public about adult-use cannabis through our statewide public awareness campaign including our new site, MoreAboutMJ.Org;
  • Hosting seminars and classes for the first cohort of our Social Equity Program, which strives to provide prospective applicants and employees the tools and insights they need to succeed in this new industry;
  • Eliminating the $50 fee for patients registered in the Medical Use of Marijuana Program;
  • Making Initial Access Certification available for qualified Medical Use of Marijuana Program patients, so they may enter dispensaries once they receive temporary registration; and
  • Developing our Responsible Vendor Training Program, which will support licensee compliance and enhance the safety of customers and employees of cannabis businesses in the Commonwealth.

We are excited about our progress, but acknowledge there is plenty of work left to do as we keep developing into the model agency we envision for Massachusetts.

Building government from scratch in order to regulate an emerging legal marketplace is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and we cannot do it alone. Thank you for your ongoing participation, support, and confidence in the Commission as we work to reach goals together.
