In the state of Maryland, we offer many ways for qualifying patients to get the relief they need in various consumption methods of medicinal cannabis. Check out Peninsula Alternative Health’s list of medical cannabis products in Maryland:

What is a vape pen?

In order to avoid the harmful effects of smoking on the lungs, vaporizer pens are the most recommended alternative by physicians and patients alike. As reported by Leaf Science, vaping eliminates harmful toxins from carbon monoxide and decreases coughing, phlegm, chest tightness, and other respiratory problems.

Vape pens are a smaller, battery-powered version of a regular vaporizer. It’s portable and typically uses pre-filled cartridges of varying sizes and cannabis strains. For patients, it’s a more discreet way to inhale medical cannabis through a smooth, comfortable mouthpiece.

Some vape pens are disposable instead of reusable, but all are able to blend sativa, indica, and hybrid strains to provide a high concentration of your preferred medical cannabis strain.

What is a transdermal patch?

Transdermal patches are medical patches that are applied to a dry, hairless part of your skin that has a vein near it for faster absorption into the bloodstream. Medicinal cannabis patches are used to treat localized pain, quickly traveling through seven layers of epidermal skin and into the bloodstream.

Some transdermal patches are as small as 2 inches by 2 inches and can last up to ten hours for all day or night relief from qualifying conditions and symptoms. Complemented by products like muscle freeze, the accurately dosed and fast-acting transdermal absorption allows for one of the most discreet ways to receive medical cannabis without a lasting high.

What is a tincture?

A tincture is a liquid form of cannabis that’s typically made from glycerin or alcohol. The majority of tinctures are flavored using extracts of natural, sweet ingredients like almond or cinnamon.

They’re distributed via an accurately dosed eyedropper under the tongue for faster absorption into the body. Typically, qualifying patients receive an average of 18 percent more tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and it takes only 15 to 30 minutes to absorb into your body.

Check out this article about the studies on tinctures from the Oregon Cannabis Connection, an Oregon-based cannabis news publication.

What is a tablet?

Like traditional medications, a cannabis tablet is administered through the mouth. As reported by Medical News Today in 2013, a study by researchers at Columbia University in New York “demonstrated the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids to treat pain, yet none have compared the analgesic effectiveness of smoked cannabis to orally administered [THC].”

Tablets taken by qualifying patients are flavored using popular commercial extracts, including berry, cinnamon, vanilla, lemonade, and watermelon.

What is a drink?

While all medical cannabis edibles are illegal in the state of Maryland, drinks are one of the most common ways to ingest this alternative medicine. Medical cannabis can be infused into soda, tea, an energy drink, juice, and other consumable liquids. Others infuse the alternative medicine into alcoholic recipes like cocktails, wine, and other beverages.

As reported by Medical Jane, according to Dr. William Courtney, a dietary raw cannabis specialist, “You’re actually walking away from 99 percent of the benefits cannabis provides when you cook or smoke cannabis.”

However, in its raw form, the plant contains tetrahydrocannabinolic-acid (THCA) and cannabidiolic-acid (CBDA), two cannabinoids known for their medicinal benefits.

Because most drink recipes call for raw cannabis, your body is able to tolerate a larger dose of medical cannabis when in a drink, which is widely known to reduce inflammation.
